Hello Everyone Shon here! We are new to Rhomobile but have team of 12 ROR experts. We are evaluating mobile platforms for our internal use, subsequently for our clients in future. At the moment we would like to try Rhomobile to connect to our different SQL and NoSql databases (within single mobile app), and build Android and iOS interfaces to present this data. After going through website, it was not clear, when exactly to go for paid support.
Please could suggest what portion we can evaluate free by using open source components (and appropriate links), and for what portion we will need to use paid components and support.
Sorry for posting a too basic question, as being a new to this platform. Thank You ..
You can use all publicly available features of RhoMobile for free, and almost all parts of it, except couple of enterprise extensions are open sourced. Please find the downloads section with latest version here: tau-technologies.com/developers/downloads/
What Tau Technologies can do for you on a paid basis is: 1) Providing a RhoMobile support with priority bugfix and issue resolving. Provided on per subscription plan/per year/per developer basis. I will forward you an email with subscription options. 2) Providing consulting, learning and integration options for RhoMobile and RhoConnect. 3) Implementing extensions and customizations for RhoMobile, on fixed-price or T&M basis. 4) Other development/consulting services.
Regards, Alex Epifanov VP Technology. Tau Technologies.
You should not be connecting to your SQL databases directly from Rhomobile platform app.
You should connect to databases via a backend. You can use RhoConnect (based on Ruby Sinatra) or make your own backend using e.g. REST interface and any backend technology you are familiar with. I have done that using Sinatra (but not RhoConnect). I have worked with clients who have made their own backends using ASP.net with rEST because it was more familiar for them. Rhoconnect could be a good choice because you are connecting to multiple backend databases - it was made for that.
FWIW, I am a US-based developer who has worked with the platform for several years - going back to when Rhomobile was a startup and then through the Motorola Solutions and Zebra acquisitions - including a couple of the big names listed on the user companies list. I can vouch for the excellence and prompt response for the support service, I've used a subscription with two projects with three companies (it's complicated! ) And Tau has done work on a project when we were understaffed for an urgent need, and again I can attest to excellent responsiveness and results!
I do recommend paid support (for ALL critical components) at the point at which your project becomes real. I try to make sure clients budget this for all critical components. (So, for example, for a recent project, we also made sure we had MatLab support, as we incorporated some MatLab code via MatLab Coder which generates C code that could be included using a Rhodes Native Extension.)
Feel free to reach out in case you should need some project start-up guidance.
